At about age 8, Judy Larsen's mom started her in a beginning sewing class. Her first project was a basic garment. This is where she used a 5/8” seam allowance. Even today in quilting when she sews jackets and vests, that 5/8” seam is still used. Then each year as she grew in knowledge and excitement about the various techniques and colors, she continued with the textile field until she was out of high school. There needed to be a next step… and that was piecing quilt tops and doing quilting. As we all know, this is where she began to use that famous ¼” seam allowance instead. What a transition yet, the same truism that the needle goes up and the needle goes down, whether creating clothing or quilting projects.
